Still a nice place for a family walk and great summer camps run through the city here.
Great place to visit. We always end our hike a Heber Downs here. Lovely well kept property.
Super nice place. The part the city still owns is still fine, especially the new war memorial who deserves 5 stars. But the Cullen's building structure have been under construction for 2-3 years by a company that wants to build a premium spa. obviously they failed since they didn't do anything after they put fences and rip up the old garden. So Whitby town did a poor job in selecting a land owner who had a good project and the financial backing to get through it. Now the front of that nice park is a complete eyesore.
The forest in the northeast side of the property is still as beautiful as it was back in the day. Although it is eerie and sad to find that there is very little recognizable left in a place that was once teaming with life. There are still little remnants of the glorious past - if you know where to find them.I regret to say there is only the one surviving covered bridge. One was burned down by vandals and the other one is missing, in it's place is a steel foot bridge since atleast 2010. There is the former wishing well and mini golf remains. But aside from those things there is almost nothing left anymore. Some parts are scarcely recognizable. Who knows if the town will actually keep that lone covered bridge in the long term either. I suspect it will disappear in the future as well, once they get tired of looking after it.The north side of the property has new owners, who tore everything out and left an unsightly mess. They have also recently set about destroying the beautiful main building with it's bell tower and restaurant for questionable reasons, some of which are a result of long term neglect. The town never put any money into maintaining the structure and the new owners allowed it to further deteriorate and fall victim to vandals. In it's place it will be a spa complex.... Like we need anymore of those. The log cabin has been moved to the north to protect it from demolition and there are a couple of small surviving buildings on the town owned part of the property. The area with the chimney and former loafing barn is inside the spa property and will probably end up being demolished in the not too distant future. In January of 2006. It was triumphantly announced that Cullen Gardens was "to be saved" and that it would "live on" - minus the miniature village and show gardens. But as of 2017 it is obvious that was nothing more than an empty gesture by the town to make it look like they actually cared about the place. It was never actually saved and they made very little effort to maintain any of the property they inherited, letting most of it go to the dogs and then selling part of it off to get some of their money back after most people forgot about it. I wouldn't be surprised if they sell the rest of it to the new development at some point in the future. The point is. If you are coming to find Cullen Gardens. Don't bother. For all intents and purposes, it's dead. The presence of Cullen Gardens and its legacy is almost completely erased from existence. It is destined to be completely forgotten and that's pretty sad.
Curious about what they're about to transform it into....bee going there for years...great to walk around with your significant other
